Decisions…

‘A man who procrastinates in his choosing will inevitably have his choice made for him by circumstance.’ – Hunter S. Thompson.

I’ve been reading a little of Hunter S. Thompsons writing. Some of you may recognize him as Hunter, others may recognize him as his alter ego “Raoul Duke”. This is one of my favorite quotes of his. If you have seen “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” with Johnny Depp playing Hunter, you’ll know who I’ve referenced.

Parents, the one thing you can do to help your child(ren) early on in life, is to teach them to make their own choices. ┬áPersonally, in my own life, I’ve had issues making decisions. This is not my parents fault, I’ve been an adult now for quite some time. ┬áSome things I’ve experienced from not making choices are all negative. Negative emotions, Anxiety, Doubt, Fear…

Anxiety is a fear of the future. “What if…. ” Is the question that is repeated inside the head of an anxious person. They’re all bad “what if’s” too… It’s never “What if I win the lottery?”, “What if I’m offered a high paying job?” It’s always “What if I lose my money?”, “What if my health fails?”

A choice, is taking control of the future. A choice forces you to accept the circumstance at hand, and take an active part in directing it. This active part that you take will inevitably help stomp out your anxiety, your fear, your doubt…

The next few posts will be how to encourage your child to make choices in different areas and stages of their lives. Every action that we make is a choice. Everything we say, do, write, all of it… it’s a choice. If we can help our kids learn to make healthy, positive, INFORMED, EDUCATED choices each day… we are setting our children up for success through out life!
